As the El Faro Wreck Nears Ten Years Past, A New Masterpiece Emerges in Maeve McGoran’s “Shipwreck: How a Captain, Company and Culture Sank The SS El Faro”

Posted by

Think you know a lot about the SS El Faro? I sure do. I read three great books about the wreck, wrote a small one myself, attended the Marine Board hearings and try to keep up to date.

Turns out, I had tons to learn and Maeve McGowan is the teacher in her superb audio-book, pod-cast, “Shipwreck.”

For nearly ten years, Maeve, a former NPR journalist, has probed every corner of the SS El Faro disaster to provide a crystal clear, detailed examination of the people, the companies and the regulators. Her insight into personalities, cultures and institutions is formidable.

The cool thing is none of the detail feels like detail. The narration, the narrative all flows into a classic sea story.

If you are remotely connected to the maritime world, you need to check this out. Audible has a free promotion underway, I believe, though I intentionally paid full freight in hopes this remarkable work steams on and on.
